Pick a full-island day by the coast you sleep on, then by the stop list, then by what the price covers.
Which Coast a Full-Island Day Starts From
A full-island day covers both the Hilo and Kona sides, so the stop list and starting side decide the day.
According to the Wikipedia entry on Hawaii (island), Hawaiʻi Island is the largest island in the United States, with 4,028 square miles (10,430 km2) of land, 63% of the Hawaiian archipelago's combined landmass. On an island that size, I treat the drive between the Kona and Hilo sides as part of the day whenever a tour leaves from the other coast.
I know that crossing from my own drives. In November 2022, the scene went like this: "Driving the Saddle Road between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, I rolled the window down and the air bit cold and thin." Fog poured across the old lava fields in slow gray sheets, and off to the south the sky over Mauna Loa glowed a dull red that I could see from my seat. What I took from that: fill your tank and pack a jacket before crossing the island, because the road climbs into cold, foggy country with few places to stop.
Skip a cross-island loop on any day when you already hold an evening booking on the opposite coast.

Stops That Decide a Full-Island Loop
The stop list is where these four listings split. Every one names Volcanoes National Park, but the waterfall, the beach and the extras differ: one names Akaka Falls, two name Rainbow Falls, one adds Thurston Lava Tube and Parker Ranch, and one adds Hilo Farmers Market.
The volcano park anchors all of them. According to the Wikipedia entry on Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park was established on August 1, 1916, and was designated a World Heritage Site in 1987.
The park is also bigger than one viewpoint. In August 2014, I had this moment: "Heading down Chain of Craters Road, I pulled into a turnout and stepped onto black lava that crunched like broken glass." Heat rose off the rock in waves, and the only sound was wind moving through the dry grass, with the ocean lying flat and blue far below against the edge of the old flows. My advice: pack water and snacks before you head down this road on your own, and treat the drive as a long outing, not a quick detour.
Waterfalls split the listings too. In October 2013, my drive north went like this: "Driving north along the Hāmākua Coast, I crossed bridge after bridge over gulches full of tree ferns and roaring water." The windows fogged with the warm, wet air, and at ʻAkaka Falls the spray reached me on the path, cool on my face, while the roar drowned out every bird. What I took from that: wear shoes with good grip on the falls path, and give yourself time to pull over at the lookouts along the coast road. For more falls-first options, see my waterfall tours page.

Weather, Wildlife and the Limits of One Loop
Rain, turtles and whales are all outside any operator's control, and the listings do not promise them.
Hilo's numbers set the expectation. According to the Wikipedia entry on Hilo, Hawaii, Hilo sits on the windward coast and averaged about 126.72 inches (3,220 mm) of rain a year at Hilo International Airport between 1981 and 2010, with rain on 272 days of the year.
As the Hawaii (island) reference describes the coast, Punaluʻu Beach has black basalt sand and is frequented by endangered hawksbill and threatened green sea turtles, which bask on the sand.
The Kona side offers its own unplanned moments. My February 2019 memory starts here: "I sat on the seawall along Aliʻi Drive as the sun slid toward the water off Kailua Kona." The rock under my legs still held the warmth of the afternoon, the waves hissed through the lava below, and out past the pier a humpback spout hung white in the orange light while people along the walk went quiet. What I took from that: in winter, keep binoculars handy at any west side sunset, because humpbacks can surface close enough to see from shore. None of the four listings here mentions whales, and I would not plan a day around one.

Your hotel coast narrows the field fast. My comparison of a volcano tour from Kona vs Hilo goes deeper on the side-of-island question.

Volcano-only days are another route. If the park matters more to you than the full loop, my volcano tours page compares shorter options.
What to Check Before Booking a Full-Island Day
Read the cancellation terms against weather. Those terms come from the operator, so the listing's own policy is the one to trust, together with official advisories for the park and roads.
Finally, recheck the eruption status the evening before, not only when you book.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I see lava on a Big Island in a day tour?
Lava visibility depends on Kīlauea's current activity, which the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reports.
Do the two "Big Island in a Day" listings follow the same route?
Their cards describe different days. One names rainforest waterfalls and a black-sand beach with lunch included, while the other names Akaka Falls and leaves lunch to you.
Which listing works if I am staying on the Kona side?
Ask each operator whether its pickup points reach your Kona-side hotel. Only the Big Island Scenic Tour summary names its pickup area, and that area is Hilo.
Are park fees included in these full-island tours?
The Volcanoes Waterfalls Sightseeing and History listing states park fees are included. The other three listings ask you to confirm fees, so treat them as unconfirmed until the operator answers.
What should I bring on a day that crosses the island?
A jacket, water and grippy shoes cover the cold uplands and wet waterfall paths.
