Which Volcano Day Fits the Side of the Island You Sleep On

Pick your Big Island volcano tour by the town you wake up in, then by what the listing includes. Kona-side and Hilo-side departures are far apart, so a Kona-side stay turns a volcano day into a cross-island outing.

The Hawaii Volcanoes National Park reference describes the main route plainly. The Chain of Craters Road leads from the summit area to the coast, passing several craters from historic eruptions.

That road taught me to respect the clock. Back in August 2014, I wrote this down almost as written: "Heading down Chain of Craters Road, I pulled into a turnout and stepped onto black lava that crunched like broken glass." Heat rose off the rock in waves, and the only sound I heard was wind moving through the dry grass. Far below, the ocean lay flat and blue against the edge of the old flows. What I took from that: pack water and snacks before you head down this road, and plan it as a long outing, not a quick detour.

Big Island in a Day: Volcanoes Waterfalls Sightseeing and History for a Single Long Loop

This listing books a full guided day that, according to the listing, visits Volcanoes National Park, rainforest waterfalls and a black-sand beach. The card says lunch, snacks, refreshments and park fees are included, which makes it the one card on this page that states park entry outright.

The card does not name a departure town, so confirm the pickup points and the exact return time before you pay.

Big Island Volcano Tours Sorted by Departure Side

Only two ground listings here name their side of the island: Volcano National Park Adventure From Kona leaves from Kona, and the Hawaii Volcano National Park Shore Excursion runs from Hilo. The twilight stargazing tour and Big Island in a Day do not state a departure point on their cards, so confirm pickup before you count them as Kona-side or Hilo-side options.

My side-by-side breakdown of the two coasts lives in my Kona versus Hilo volcano tour comparison.

Volcano National Park Adventure From Kona for Geology-Minded Kona Stays

This listing books a long volcano national park day trip from Kona with a small company that, the listing says, was founded by a geologist. The card does not state pickup, the route, meals, park fees or the walking involved, so I would put each of those to the operator in writing.

Hawaii Volcano National Park Shore Excursion for Cruise Days in Hilo

This listing books a guided drive from Hilo with waterfalls, a stop in Volcano village, a lava field walk in the national park and photos taken by the guide.

My advice: confirm that the return time suits your ship's all-aboard, and ask which food stops cost extra, since the listing flags that some do.

What the Eruption and the Park Fees Mean Before You Pay

No volcano tour can promise lava, and no listing on this page does. According to the Kīlauea reference, Kīlauea is the most active of the five volcanoes that form Hawaiʻi Island and among the most active volcanoes on Earth. Kīlauea's current eruption began in December 2024 inside Halemaʻumaʻu crater, with episodic lava fountains that come and go rather than a constant lava lake.

I saw what that means one night in January 2025. As written in my notes: "At an overlook on the rim of Kīlauea's summit crater, I wrapped my hands around a thermos while the night settled in." A faint smell of sulfur drifted past on the wind. Down inside Halemaʻumaʻu the glow pulsed orange against the steam, brighter than I had seen in years, and the crowd along the rail spoke in whispers. What I took from that: the fountains come and go and some nights show only steam, so check the park's eruption updates and the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory before you drive up or pay for a tour.

Fees change, so I treat the Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park fees page from the NPS as the source to recheck. The Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park private vehicle pass costs $30 and admits the passholder and up to 14 passengers of one private, non-commercial vehicle; the park does not accept cash. Commercial road-based guided tours pay their own park entrance fee based on vehicle seating capacity, separate from the private vehicle pass.

On this page, only the Big Island in a Day card says park fees are included. The Kona adventure card does not state park fees, and I see no mention of park entry on the twilight, shore excursion or helicopter cards, so ask each operator.

Big Island, Hawaii: Volcanic Safari for a Short Flight Over Volcanic Scenery

This listing books a helicopter tour with Safari Helicopters, titled as a volcanic flight and described in its summary as a long-running, family-owned operator. Confirm the departure heliport, the route, whether active lava is likely to be visible and the weight limits before you pay.

My helicopter versus ground tour comparison and my helicopter tours page cover the air option in more depth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does any Big Island volcano tour guarantee seeing lava?

No listing here guarantees lava, and the helicopter card asks you to confirm whether active lava is likely to be visible. Check the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory on the morning of your tour for the latest eruption status.

Which volcano tour on this page lists park entry as included?

Big Island in a Day is the only card on this page that states park fees are included. If you plan a separate self-drive visit, remember the park does not accept cash at the entrance.

Should I book a volcano tour from Kona or from Hilo?

Book from the side you are sleeping on, because the cross-island drive becomes part of any tour from the opposite coast. Kona stays have a named Kona departure here, and Hilo cruise days have a named Hilo departure.

Can cruise passengers fit a volcano tour into a Hilo port day?

The Hawaii Volcano National Park Shore Excursion is set up for passengers docking in Hilo. Ask the operator directly how the return time lines up with your ship's all-aboard before you pay.

Is a helicopter flight or a ground tour the stronger volcano choice?

A ground tour puts you at the overlooks and lava tube, while a flight shows the volcanic landscape from above without the walking. Weather cancellations hit air tours first, so a flight needs spare days around it.
